How does Evelyn hear music?

Answer:
Evelyn is a totally deaf child. Her listening capacity had totally failed when she was eleven years old. Mr Ron Forbes inspires her to pursue her music. He asks her not to listen music through her ears but in some other way. Evelyn works hard. She began to listen music through every part of her body. She listens the high tone of the drum from the waist up and lower tone from the waist down.

She says that she has learnt to open her mind and body to sounds and vibrations. She says that music tingles in her skin, her cheekbones and even her hair. When she plays the xylophone, she senses the music through her finger tops. By leaning against the drums, she feels the echoes of its music. On a wooden platform she performs bare footed so that music may reach to her heart through feet and legs.

I. Imagine the famous singer Kishori Amonkar is going to visit your school. You have been asked to introduce her to the audience before her performance. How would you introduce her?

Padma Bhushan Kishori Amonkar, widely considered the finest female vocalist of her generation, was bom in 1931, daughter of another great artist, Smt Mogubai Kurdikar. In her early years she absorbed the approach and repertoire of her distinguished mother’s teacher Ustad Alladiya Khan. As her own style developed, however, she moved away from Alladiya Khan’s “Jaipur-Atrauli gharana” style in some respects, and as a mature artist her approach is usually regarded as an individual, if not unique, variant of the Jaipur model.

Kishori Amonkar is a thinker, besotted by what she calls the mysterious world of her raagas. She dissects them with the precision of a prefectionist, almost like a scientist, until the most subtle of shades and emotions emerge and re-emerge.

She is very much inspired by the teachings of the ancient Vedic sages, written at a time when vocal music was highly devotional in character. This soul searching quality of her music, coupled with a very intellectual approach to raaga performance has gained her quite a following in India and has helped to revive the study of Khayal.

Significant awards bestowed on this artist include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1985), the Padma Bhushan (1987), and the highly coveted Sangeet Samradhini Award (considered as one of the most prestigious awards in Indian Classical Music) in 1997.

3. लेकिन इवलिन हिम्मत हारने वाली नहीं थी। उसने एक सामान्य जीवन जीने का और संगीत में अपनी रुचि बनाए रखने का दृढ़ निश्चय कर लिया था। एक दिन उसने एक लड़की को जायलोफोन बजाते हुए देखा और उसने स्वयं भी उसे बजाने का निर्णय लिया। उसके अधिकतर शिक्षकों ने उसे निरुत्साहित किया, लेकिन तबलावादक रोम फोर्बज़ ने उसकी क्षमता को पहचान लिया था। उसने दो ढोलकों को अलग-अलग आवाजों में बजाना शुरू कर दिया।

6. बिना सुनने की शक्ति के इवलिन को इतने सहज ढंग से संगीत बजाते सुनना बहुत ही मनमोहक लगता है। हमारे दो घंटे के वार्तालाप में वह कभी भी एक शब्द भी सुनने से नहीं चुकी। उसने हँसकर कहा, “झाड़ीदार दाढ़ी वाले लोग मेरे लिए कष्ट बन जाते हैं।” ‘केवल होंठों को देखकर ही नहीं सुना जा सकता, यह तो सारे चेहरे से प्रकट होता है और खास तौर पर आंखों से।’ वह धारा-प्रवाह रूप से स्कॉटलैंड के लहजे में बोलती जा रही थी। मेरा उच्चारण इसलिए स्पष्ट है क्योंकि मैं 11 वर्ष की आयु तक तो सुन सकती थी’ वह कहती है। लेकिन वह यह बात स्पष्ट नहीं करती है कि उसने फ्रांसीसी भाषा कैसे सीखी और जापानी भाषा के मौलिक रूप में कुशलता कैसे प्राप्त की।

वह युवा संगीतकारों के प्रशिक्षण के लिए कक्षाएँ लगाने को भी बहुत प्राथमिकता देती है। बहरे बच्चों के लिए बनी बीथावन फंड नामक संस्थान की एन्न रिचलिन कहती है, “बहरे बच्चों के लिए वह एक चमकता हुआ प्रेरणापुंज है। वे देखते हैं कि ऐसी कोई भी जगह नहीं है जहाँ वे पहुँच नहीं सकते हैं।”

Bismillah Khan was one of the great personalities of Hindustani music. He belonged to the Benaras Gharana. He was bom in Dumraon in Bihar. His interest in music was visible from his childhood. As a Shehnai player, he had won national and international awards. He had travelled all over the world. He had also been awarded the nation’s highest award ‘Bharat Ratna’. Bismillah Khan thought that music can bridge the gap between different communities. So he wanted that music should be made a compulsory subject in schools.

This chapter tells us about the origin of the Indian musical instrument Shehnai. It also gives the life history of the great Shehnai player, Bismillah Khan.

It is said that in the past a musical instrument called pungi used to be played in palaces before the kings and Nawabs. But Aurangzeb did not like the shrill and unpleasant sound of the pungi. So he banned the playing of this musical instrument in the royal residence. There was a barber who belonged to a family of musicians. He had access to the royal palace.

He tried hard to improve the tonal quality of the instrument .He chose a pipe with a natural hollow stem that was longer and broader than the original pungi. He carved seven holes on the body of the instrument. When he played on it, an impressive sonorous tonal sound was produced. The barber played it before the king and his courtiers. Everybody was impressed. The instrument was called Shehnai because it was bom in the Shah’s chamber and was invented by a ‘nai’ (barber).

The original Shehnai players were mostly employed in temples. They played the Shehnai before the images at various times of the day. It was also played on North Indian wedding and an every auspicious occasion. Gradually, the Shehnai became very popular.

Ustad Bismillah Khan is the greatest Shehnai player. He belongs to the Benaras Gharana of Hindustani Music. He was bom at Dumraon in Bihar. He belonged to a family of professional Shehnai players. As a five year old boy, Bismillah Khan used to play gilli-danda near a pond in Dumraon.

After playing he generally went to a nearby temple called Bihariji Temple. He would sit there and sing the Bhojpuri ‘Chaita’. The local Maharaja was pleased to hear him sing. At the age of three, he went to Benaras. There his maternal uncle Ali Bux taught him the art of playing Shehnai. For hours, he would practise in the temples of Balaji and Mangala Maiya.

He would also go to the bank of Ganga and practise in solitude. Even as a child, Bismillah Khan won many awards. He got his first big award when he was only 14 years old. He got it at the All India Music Conference inAllahabad. On the day of independence, 15thAugust, 1947,heplayed at the Red Fort at the request of Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1999, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country.

Bismillah Khan is fondly called Khansaab. He has travelled all over the world. He got honours in every country. In Tehran, an auditorium was named after him. He has seen many cities, but he remains very fond of Benaras and Dumraon. He calls them the most wonderful towns in the world.

He has a special fascination for Benaras because of the Ganga there. In his youth, he used to practise Shehnai in solitude on the banks of the Ganga. Once one of his students in the USA requested him to head a Shehnai school there. He said that he would recreate the atmosphere of Benaras by building similar temples there.

But the Ustad asked him whether he would bring the Ganga also there. Once he said, “Whenever I am in Mumbai, I think of only Varanasi and the holy Ganga”. And while in varanasi, I miss the unique “mattha in Dumraon”.

2. शहनाई की धुन को पवित्र/शुभ माना जाने लगा। और यही कारण है कि इसे मंदिरों में बजाया जाने लगा और यह उत्तर भारतीय शादी में बजाया जाने वाला एक बेजोड़ यंत्र बन गया। भूतकाल में. शहनाई नौबत या नी वाधयंत्रों के एक परंपरागत समह का हिस्सा थी जो कि राज दरबार में मिलते थे। हाल ही के वर्षों तक इसका प्रयोग केवल शादी या मंदिरों में किया जाता था। इस वाद्ययंत्र को गौरवशाली स्तर तक लाने का श्रेय उस्ताद बिस्मिल्ला खान को जाता है।

3. जब विस्मिल्ला खान पांच वर्ष की आयु के थे तो वह बिहार की दुमराओं रियासत के एक तालाब के पास गिल्ली-डंडा खेलते थे। वह भोजपुरी ‘चैता’ गाने के लिए पास ही में स्थित बिहारी जी के मंदिर में जाया करता था और संगीत की समाप्ति के अंत में उसे इनाम के रूप में स्थानीय महाराजा के द्वारा सबा किलो का एक लह मिलता था। यह 80 वर्ष पहले की बात है, और उस लड़के ने भारत के सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान भारत रत्न को प्राप्त करने तक का सफर तय कर लिया है।

4.21 मार्च, 1916 को जन्मे बिस्मिल्ला खान का जन्म बिहार के प्रसिद्ध संगीतकारों के घराने में हआ था। उसके दादा, रसूल. बक्श खान भोजपुर के राजा के दरबार के शहनाई नवाज थे। उसके पिता, पैगंबर बक्श और अन्य पूर्वज भी महान शहनाई वादक थे।

5. छोटे बालक ने बहुत जल्दी ही संगीत सीखना शुरू कर दिया। तीन वर्ष की आयु में जब उसकी माँ उसको उसके मामा के घर बनारस (वाराणसी) ले गई।

तो बिस्मिल्ला खान अपने मामा को शहनाई बजाते देखकर बहुत प्रभावित हुए। शीघ्र ही बिस्मिल्ला ने अपने मामा अली बक्श के साथ वाराणसी के विष्णु मंदिर में जाना शुरू कर दिया जहाँ पर कि उसके मामा शहनाई बादक के रूप में नौकरी करते थे।

अली बक्श शहनाई बजाते थे और बिस्मिल्ला घंटों शहनाई वादन के अंत तक वहाँ मंत्र-मग्ध होकर बैठे रहते थे। शीघ्र ही उसने शहनाई वादन की तालीम लेनी शुरू कर दी और सारा दिन बैठकर रियाज करते थे। आने वाले वर्षों में बाला जी आर मगला मय्या क मदिर तथा गंगा के तट उनके प्रिय स्थल बन गए जहाँ वह एकांत में बैठकर घंटों रियाज कर सकते थे। गंगा के बहते जल ने उन्हें नए रागों का आविष्कार करने के लिए प्रेरित किया जोकि पहले कभी भी शहनाई वादन के क्षेत्र में थे ही नहीं।

6. 14 वर्ष की आयु में, बिस्मिल्ला अपने मामा के साथ इलाहाबाद संगीत सम्मेलन में गए। उसके गायन के पश्चात उस्ताद फैयाज खान ने छोटे लड़के की पीठ को थपथपाया और कहा, “परिश्रम करो और तुम्हें सफलता हासिल हो जाएगी।” 1998 में लखनऊ में ऑल इंडिया रेडियो की स्थापना से बिस्मिल्ला खान को एक बड़ा अवसर उपलब्ध हो गया। शीघ्र ही वह रेडियो पर प्रायः सुनाई देने वाले शहनाई वादक बन गए।

7. जब 15 अगस्त, 1947 को भारत ने आजादी प्राप्त की, तो बिस्मिल्ला खान अपनी शहनाई के साथ देश को बधाई देने वाले पहले नागरिक बने। उसने राग कैफी के माध्यम से लाल किले से उस भीड़ के सामने अपने हृदय की भावनाओं को उडेत कर रख दिया जिसमें महात्मा गांधी और पंडित जवाहरलाल नेहरू शामिल थे। जिसने बाद में ‘भाग्य के साथ समझौता’ नामक महान भाषण दिया।

8. बिस्मिल्ला खान ने भारत और विदेश दोनों में कई चिरस्मरणीय प्रदर्शन किए हैं। विदेश की उसकी पहली यात्रा अफगानिस्तान की थी जहाँ पर राजा जाकिर शाह उसके संगीत से इतना अधिक प्रभावित हुआ कि उसने उसे फारस का बहुमूल्य कालीन तथा कई अन्य स्मृति चिहन भेंट किए।

अफगानिस्तान का राजा ही केवल मात्र ऐसा नहीं है जो बिस्मिल्ला के संगीत से प्रभावित हुआ है। फिल्म निर्देशक विजय भह एक समारोह में बिस्मिल्ला के शहनाई वादन को सुनकर इतना प्रभावित हुआ कि उसने अपनी फिल्म का नाम इस यंत्र के नाम पर “गूंज उठी शहनाई” रख दिया। फिल्म बहुत ही सफल रही और बिस्मिल्ला खान की एक रचना, “दिल का खिलीना हाय टूट गया……..” ने देश में संगीत के पहले के सभी रिकॉर्ड तोड़ दिए।

इस परंपरावादी संसार में (फिल्मी संगीत में) अत्यधिक सफलता के बावजूद फिल्मों में बिस्मिल्ला खान का रुझान केवल दो फिल्मों तक ही सीमित रहा-विजय भट्ट की फिल्म ‘गूंज उठी शहनाई और विक्रम श्रीनिवास की कन्नड फिल्म ‘सन्नाधी अपन्ना। “में सिर्फ इस नकली और तड़क-भड़क वाले फिल्मी संसार के साथ अपने आपको नहीं बांध सकता हूँ, वह काफी दबाव के साथ कहते हैं।

9. उन्हें इनाम और प्रशंसा बहुत अधिक मात्रा में और शीघ्रता से मिली। बिस्मिल्ला खान ऐसे पहले भारतीय बन गए जिन्हें संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के प्रतिष्ठित लिंकन केंद्रीय हाल में शहनाई वादन हेतु बुलाया गया। उन्होंने मॉन्टेरियल में आयोजित कान कला समारोह तथा ओसाका व्यापार मेले में भी हिस्सा लिया। वह अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर इतना प्रसिद्ध हो गए कि तेहरान में एक रंगभवन का नाम उनके नाम पर तहार मौसकी उस्ताद बिस्मिल्ला खान रख दिया गया।

10. पदम श्री, पदम भूषण और पदम विभूषण जैसे राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कारों से उन्हें अलंकृत किया गया।

11. 2001 में, उस्ताद बिस्मिल्ला खान को भारत के सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान ‘भारत रत्न’ से सम्मानित किया गया। इस चिर प्रतिक्षित पुरस्कार के मैडल को अपने सीने पर लटकाकर और अपनी आंखों में एक दुर्लभ चमक के साथ उन्होंने कहा, “मैं जो कहना चाहता हूँ-अपने बच्चों को संगीत सिखाइए, यह भारत की सबसे समृद्ध परंपरा है; यहाँ तक कि पश्चिमी देश भी हमारे संगीत को सीखने के लिए आ रहे हैं।”

12. सारे संसार में यात्रा करने के बावजूद भी खानसाहब जैसा कि उन्हें प्यार से पुकारा जाता है उन्हें बनारस और दुमराओं से बहुत लगाव है और वे उनके लिए दुनिया के सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण शहरों में रहेंगे। एक बार उनका एक विद्यार्थी चाहता था कि वे संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में एक शहनाई स्कूल के मुखिया के रूप में कार्य करें और विद्यार्थी ने वचन दिया कि वह वहाँ के मंदिरों की प्रतिकृतियाँ स्थापित करके बनारस जैसा माहौल कर देंगे।

लेकिन खानसाहब ने उनसे पूछा कि क्या वे गंगा नदी को भी वहाँ ला सकते हैं। बाद में उन्होंने कहा, “यही कारण है कि जब मैं विदेश में होता हूँ तो मैं हिंदुस्तान को देखने के लिए लालायित रहता हूँ और जब मैं मुंबई में होता हूँ तो मैं वाराणसी और पवित्र गंगा को देखने के लिए तत्पर रहता हूँ और जब मैं वाराणसी में होता हूँ तो मुझे दुमराओं के विचित्र ‘माठे’ (लस्सी) की याद आती है।

13. उस्ताद बिस्मिल्ला खान का जीवन भारत की समृद्ध सांस्कृतिक विरासत का संपूर्ण उदाहरण है और कोई भी इस बात को जरा-सा भी प्रयास किए बिना समझ सकता है कि उस जैसा एक धार्मिक मुसलमान काशी विश्वनाथ मंदिर में हर सुबह शहनाई वादन कर सकता है।
