Years later when Sergei comes across Lushkoff, he is no longer a beggar but a respectable notary. Then he discloses the fact that it was Sergei’s maidservant who had chopped the wood for him. This act of her kindness had influenced him so much that his whole life was changed.

The day advocate Sergei came across a beggar. He was dressed in very poor clothes. He was crying and requested Sergei to have pity on him. He told Sergei that he had the offer of a position in Kaluga, but he did not have money to get there. So he wanted some money to pay for the fare. Sergei looked at the beggar closely.
Suddenly he remembered that he had seen him the previous day in Sadovya Street. Then he had told him that he was a student and had been expelled for not paying his fees. At first, the beggar denied the charge. But when Sergei rebuked him, he admitted that he earned his living by lying. He told Sergei that his name was Lushkoff and that he was out of work.
Sergei refused to give him alms. But he said that he would give him work of chopping wood. He brought Lushkoff home. He called his maidservant Olga and told her to take him into the woodshed and get some wood chopped. Sergei could see from room that Lushkoff was weak as well as unwilling to do the chopping work. However, after one hour, Olga came and told Sergei that the wood had been chopped. Sergei gave Lushkoff half a rouble.
After getting wood chopped, Sergei was happy that he had helped a man. He had reformed a beggar. He told Lushkoff that he could come on the first of every month and chop wood for money. Thus Lushkoff came on the first of every month . Although he was so weak that he could hardly stand on his legs, yet there was always work for him and he did it.
Sometimes, it was chopping of wood. At other times, he had to shovel snow, or to put the woodshed in order. Sometimes, he was asked to beat the dust out of mattresses and rugs. Every time he received from twenty to forty copecks. One day Sergei moved to another house. He hired Lushkoff to help in packing and hauling of furniture. This time, he was silent and sober.
After the work was done, Sergei offered to find better work for him. He wrote a letter to one of his friends. He gave this letter to Lushkoff and told him that he would find the job of copying the written matter. In this way, Sergei helped Lushkoff. He was pleased at having put a man on the right path.
After that Sergei did not come across Lushkoff for two years. Then one day, he came across Lushkoff standing at the ticket window of a theatre, paying for a seat. He was wearing a coat collar of curly fur and sealskin cap. Sergei recognised him. Lushkoff told him that now he was a notary and was paid thirtyfive roubles a month.
Sergei was pleased to hear this. He congratulated Lushkoff for standing on his own feet in life. At this, Lushkoff disclosed something to him. He said that it was not because of him, but his maidservant Olga that he had reformed himself. When he used to come to his house to chop wood, he could not do so because he was weak and inexperienced.
Then Olga would take pity on him and chop the wood for him. He told Sergei that he never chopped a single stick. It was all done by Olga. Her kindness transformed him. He stopped drinking and started earning his living by work. In this way, Olga’s kindness had changed his life.

दो साल बीत गए। तब एक शाम, जब सरजई एक थियेटर की टिकट खिड़की के पास अपनी सीट का भुगतान करने के लिए खड़ा था, तो उसने अपने पास एक छोटे कद के व्यक्ति को खड़े देखा जिसके कोट का कॉलर मुड़े हुए फर का था और उसने सील की खाल की टोपी पहनी हुई थी। इस छोटे व्यक्ति ने शर्माते हुए टिकट विक्रेता को गैलरी में सीट देने को कहा और उसका भुगतान तांबे के सिक्कों से किया।
“लशकॉफ, यह तुम हो क्या ?” इस छोटे व्यक्ति को अपने पहले वाले लकड़ी काटने वाले के रूप में पहचान कर सरजई चिल्लाकर बोला। “तुम कैसे हो ? तुम क्या कर रहे हो ? आपके लिए हर चीज कैसी है ?”
“सब ठीक है। अब मैं एक नोटरी हूँ और मुझे प्रति महीने पैंतीस रूबल मिलते हैं।”

“भगवान का धन्यवाद है! यह अच्छी बात है! तुम्हारी खातिर, मैं प्रसन्न हूँ। लशकॉफ, मैं बहुत-बहुत खुश हूँ। देखो, तुम एक प्रकार से मेरे धर्मपुत्र हो। तुम जानते हो, मैंने तुम्हें सही रास्ते पर आगे बढ़ाया। तुम्हें याद है मैंने तुम्हें कितनी डाँट पिलाई थी? उस दिन तो लगभग तुम मेरे पैरों पर गिर ही पड़े थे। मेरे शब्दों को न भूलने के लिए तुम्हारा धन्यवाद।”
“आपका भी धन्यवाद,” लशकॉफ ने कहा। “अगर मैं आपके पास न आया होता तो शायद अभी भी मैं स्वयं को एक अध्यापक या छात्र कहता होता। हाँ, आपके संरक्षण में आकर मैंने स्वयं को खाई से बाहर निकाला।”
“मैं सचमुच बहुत प्रसन्न हूँ।” ।
“आपके दयालु शब्दों एवं कामों के लिए धन्यवाद। मैं आपका और आपकी रसोइन का बहुत कृतज्ञ हूँ। भगवान उस अच्छी एवं नेक औरत का भला करे! आप उस समय अच्छा बोले और मैं अपनी मृत्यु के दिन तक आपका ऋणी रहूँगा; मगर अगर सही बात की जाए तो यह आपकी रसोइन ओल्गा थी जिसने मुझे बचा लिया।”
“ऐसा कैसे है ?”
“जब मैं आपके घर लकड़ी काटने आता था तो वह कहना शुरू करती थी :
‘ओह तुम शराबी! ओह तुम घृणित प्राणी! तेरे लिए संसार में विनाश के सिवाय कुछ नहीं है। और तब वह मेरे सामने बैठ जाती और उदास हो जाती, मेरे चेहरे को देखती और रोने लगती। ‘ओह अभागे व्यक्ति! तेरे लिए इस संसार में कोई खुशी नहीं है और न ही अगले संसार में होगी। तुम शराबी! तुम नरक में सड़ोगे। ओह अप्रसन्न व्यक्ति!’ और तुम जानते हो, उसी लहजे में वह बोलना जारी रखती। और मैं कह नहीं सकता कि उसे कितना कष्ट होता होगा, उसने मेरी खातिर आंसू कितने बहाए होंगे।

लेकिन मुख्य बात यह थी कि वह मेरे लिए लकड़ी काट दिया करती थी। क्या आप जानते हैं श्रीमान, मैंने आपके लिए लकड़ी का एक टुकड़ा भी नहीं काटा ? सब कुछ उसी ने किया। इस बात ने मुझे क्यों बचाया, मैं क्यों बदल गया, उसको देखने के बाद मैनें पीना क्यों छोड़ दिया, मैं समझा नहीं सकता। मैं केवल इतना जानता हूँ कि उसके शब्दों एवं नेक कामों के कारण, मेरे दिल में एक परिवर्तन आया; उसने मुझे सुधार दिया और मैं उसे कभी नहीं भूल सकता। लेकिन, अब जाने का समय हो गया है; लो घंटी बज गई है।” लशकॉफ झुका और गैलरी में चला गया।
