Then he describes his another experience. He says that once on an aeroplane, he leaned over to tie a shoelace. वास्तविक संसार में रहते हुए, जिन चीजों में मैं बहुत अच्छा नहीं हूँ वह शायद बहुत ही शानदार चीज है। मैं प्रायः विस्मित-सा हो जाता हूँ कि बहुत-सी चीजें जो मेरी पहुँच से बाहर हैं लोग उनको स्पष्ट रूप से बिना किसी कठिनाई के कर देते हैं।
मैं आपको संख्या नहीं बता सकता कि सिनेमा में मैं कितनी बार शौचालय जाता हूँ, और सिनेमा बंद होने पर मैं अपने आपको एक-तंग सी गली में स्वचालित रूप से बंद हो जाने वाले दरवाजे के पास खड़ा पाता हूँ।
अब मैं खासतौर पर इस बारे में विशिष्टता प्राप्त करता जा रहा हूँ। मैं होटल की मेजों पर दिन में दो तीन बार अपने कमरे का नंबर पूछने के लिए लौटकर आता हूँ। संक्षेप में, मैं पूरी तरह से परेशान हो गया था।
अब मैं उस बात के बारे में सोच रहा था जब मैं सपरिवार एक लंबी यात्रा पर गया। ईस्टर का पर्व था और हम वायुयान से एक सप्ताह के लिए इंग्लैंड जा रहे थे। जब हम बोस्टन में लोगान हवाई अड्डे पर पहुंचे और हमारी तलाशी ली जा रही थी, तो मुझे अचानक ही याद आया कि मैंने ब्रिटिश एयरवेज़ के नियमित यात्री कार्यक्रम में हाल ही में भाग लिया था। मुझे यह भी याद आया कि मैंने अपने कार्ड को छोटे थैले में डाला था जो मेरे गले में लटक रहा था और यहीं से ही परेशानी आरंभ हो गई।
थैले की जिप जाम हो गई। इसलिए मैंने उसे खींचा और आवेशपूर्ण गुर्राहट तथा बढ़ते हुए विस्मय के साथ उसने जिप को झटका दिया। मैंने उसे कुछ देर तक खींचे रखा लेकिन वह बिल्कुल भी नहीं सरकी, इसलिए मैंने और अधिक जोर के साथ उसे खींचा। तो आप अनुमान लगा सकते हो कि क्या हुआ होगा। अचानक ही जिप टूट गई। थैला एक तरफ से बिल्कुल खुल गया
और थैले के अंदर रखी प्रत्येक चीज समाचार-पत्र की कतरने और अन्य खुले हुए कागज, एक 14 औंस की सिगार के तंबाकू की डिब्बी, पत्रिकाएँ, पासपोर्ट, अंग्रेजी करेंसी, फिल्म ये सभी वस्तुएँ, टेनिस के मैदान जितने क्षेत्र में लापरवाहीपूर्वक फैल गई।

मैं मूकदर्शक बना देखता रहा क्योंकि सावधानीपूर्वक छांटे गए सैकड़ों कागज फड़फड़ाते हुए एक झरने की भांति नीचे गिर रहे थे, सिक्के भुलक्कड़ लोगों की तरह शोर करते हुए गिर रहे थे और अब बिना ढक्कन की तंबाकू की डिब्बी उन्मुक्त ढंग से हवाई अड्डे पर लुढ़क गई और उसके बीच में जो कुछ भी था उसे बाहर उड़ेल दिया।
“मेरा तंबाकू!” मैं विस्मयपूर्वक चिल्लाया, यह सोचकर कि अब मुझे इतने तंबाकू के लिए इंग्लैंड में और कितना खर्चा करना पड़ेगा क्योंकि एक बजट (खचा) आ भी चुका था और जा भी चुका था और तब मैंने चीख मारी “मेरी उंगली! मेरी उंगली!” क्योंकि मैंने देखा कि मेरी उंगली जिप से कट गई थी और उसमें से काफी मात्रा में खून बह रहा था।
(अपने आस-पास खून देखकर मुझे अच्छा नहीं लगता था, लेकिन जब मैंने अपना खून बहते देखा तो अहसास हुआ कि लोगों की बेहोशी सही होती है।) परेशानी की अवस्था में मेरे बाल भी डरावनी मुद्रा में खड़े हो गए।
तब मेरी पत्नी ने हैरान होकर मेरी ओर देखा-न तो वह गुस्से में थी और न ही परेशानी में, वह तो केवल मात्र हैरान थीऔर उसने कहा, “मैं विश्वास नहीं कर सकती थी कि जीविका कमाने के लिए तुम यह करते हो।”
लेकिन मुझे भय है कि ऐसा हो गया। जब भी मैं यात्रा करता हूँ मेरे साथ आपदाएँ चलती हैं। एक बार एक वायुयान में, मैं अपने जूते का फीता बांधने के लिए नीचे झुका, उसी क्षण मेरे से अगली सीट पर बैठे व्यक्ति ने अपनी सीट को पूरा नीचे की तरफ पीछे कर लिया और मैंने तो अपने आपको बिल्कुल असहाय तथा कुचली अवस्था में पाया। तब अपने से आगे बैठे व्यक्ति की टांग पर नाखून चुभोकर मैं अपने आपको मुक्त करा पाया।

एक और अवसर पर, मैंने शीतल पेय की बोतल को अपने बगल में बैठी एक छोटी प्यारी महिला की गोद में गिरा दिया था। उड़ान सहायक आया और उसने महिला के वस्त्रों को साफ किया तथा मेरे लिए बदले में दूसरा पेय ले आया और मैंने उसे भी तुरंत उस महिला के ऊपर गिरा दिया। उस दिन, मुझे नहीं मालूम कि क्या हुआ।
मुझे तो मात्र इतना याद है कि मेरी बाजू शीतल पेय की नई बोतल लेने के लिए आगे बढ़ती थी और 1950 के दशक में बनी डरावनी फिल्मों (The Undead Limb) के घटिया प्रॉप की तरह हिंसक ढंग से आगे बढ़कर बोतल को उसके स्थान से उठाती थी और महिला के पल्ले में डाल देती थी।
महिला ने मेरी ओर विस्मय भाव से देखा। आप अनुमान लगा सकते हो कि जिसे आपने कई बार गीला कर दिया हो और उसमें एक कसम खाई “ओह, साके” (जापानी मदिरा) के साथ भिगोना बंद किया और इस दौरान मैंने लोगों के बीच से भी कुछ शब्दों को कहते सुना, यह पक्का था कि वे शब्द किसी भिक्षुणी के नहीं थे।
हालांकि, वायुयान के सफर में यह मेरा सबसे बुरा अनुभव नहीं था। मेरा सबसे बुरा अनुभव तो वह था जब एक बार मैं कॉपी में महत्त्वपूर्ण बातों (जुराबें खरीदनी हैं, पेय पदार्थों को सावधानीपूर्वक पकड़ना है, इत्यादि) को लिख रहा था और विचारमग्न मुद्रा में अपने पैन के एक सिरे को चूस रहा था जैसा कि प्रायः आप करते हो और अपने से अगली सीट पर बैठी एक आकर्षक महिला के साथ बातचीत करने लग गया।

मैंने लगभग 20 मिनट तक अच्छे शिष्ट चुटकले सुनाकर उसका मनोरंजन किया, तब मैं शौचालय में गया जहाँ मुझे पता चला कि पैन तो लीक हो गया है और अब मेरा मुँह, ठोड़ी, जीभ, दाँत और मसूढ़े विचित्र ढंग से इतने गहरे नीले हो गए थे कि उन्हें रगड़कर भी साफ नहीं किया जा सकता था और वे कई दिनों तक ऐसे ही रहे।
इसलिए मुझे विश्वास है कि जब मैं सभ्य होने का प्रयास करता हूँ तो मुझे कितना कष्ट होता है, इस स्थिति को आप समझ जाएंगे। अपने जीवन में केवल एक बार बिना किसी स्थानीय विपदा के मैं रात्रि भोजन के मेज से सही सलामत उठा, कार में बैठा और 14 इंच कोट को बाहर छोड़े बिना ही बैठ गया।
मैंने हल्के रंग की पैंट पहन रखी थी और शाम को मुझे इस बात का अहसास नहीं हुआ कि मैं चुइंगम, आइसक्रीम, खांसी की दवाई तथा मोटर ऑयल पर कितनी बार बैठ चुका था। लेकिन ऐसा नहीं होना था।
अब जब भी वायुयान में भोजन बाँटा जाता है, मेरी पत्नी कहती है, “डैडी के लिए भोजन के ढक्कन खोल दो” अथवा “बच्चो, अपने-अपने ढक्कनों को ऊपर उठा लो। डैडी अपने लिए माँस काटने वाले हैं।” निःसंदेह, यह केवल मैं अपने परिवार के साथ हवाई यात्रा कर रहा हूँ।
जब मैं अपने ही परिवार के साथ हूँ, मैं न तो कुछ खाता हूँ, न पीता हूँ और न ही अपने जूतों के फीतों को बांधने के लिए नीचे झुकता हूँ और कभी भी पैन को अपने मुँह के आस-पास लेकर के नहीं आता हूँ।
मैं बिल्कुल शांत होकर बैठ जाता हूँ, कई बार मैं अपने हाथों को इधर-उधर भटकने और कोई शरारत करने से रोकता हूँ। इससे केवल उपहास ही नहीं होता, बल्कि इससे आपके लाऊंडरी (धोबी) के बिल में भी कटौती होती है।
मैं कभी भी एक नियमित यात्री के रूप में दूरी तय करने का कार्ड नहीं लेता था। न कभी लेता हूँ। कभी मुझे समय पर कार्ड मिलता भी नहीं है। यह तो मेरे लिए एक वास्तविक परेशानी बन गया है। प्रत्येक व्यक्ति जिसे मैं जानता हूँ, अपने हवाई यात्रा के मीलों के कार्ड के साथ बाली प्रथम श्रेणी में यात्रा करते हैं।
मैं कभी कार्ड एकत्र नहीं करता हूँ। मैं एक वर्ष में 1,00,000 मील का सफर तय कर लेता हूँ, लेकिन मेरे पास केवल 212 हवाई मील की यात्रा के कार्ड हैं और वे भी 23 हवाई सेवाओं के।
ऐसा इसलिए होता है कि या तो मैं हवाई यात्रा का कार्ड लेना भूल जाता हूँ या यदि मुझे कार्ड लेना याद होता है तो फिर एयरलाईंस वाले उसे दर्ज नहीं करते हैं या क्लर्क मुझे बताता है कि आप तो इसके पात्र नहीं हो। जनवरी के महीने में, ऑस्ट्रेलिया की तरफ उड़ान में जाते समय-उस उड़ान से मुझे एक जिलियन हवाई मील का कार्ड मिलना था लेकिन जब मैंने अपना कॉर्ड प्रस्तुत किया तो क्लर्क ने अपना सिर हिला दिया और मुझे बताया कि मैं किसी कॉर्ड का पात्र नहीं था।

“क्यों?” “टिकट तो B. Bryson के नाम से है और कॉर्ड W. Bryson के नाम से है।” मैंने उसे बिल और विलियम नामों के बीच घनिष्ठ और पवित्र रिश्ते की व्याख्या की लेकिन उसने उसे स्वीकार नहीं किया।
इसलिए मुझे अपने हवाई मील नहीं मिले और मैं बाली प्रथम श्रेणी से यात्रा नहीं कर पाऊँगा। शायद मैं इतनी दूर तक बिना कुछ खाए जा भी नहीं सकूँगा।
