I Want Something in a Cage Summary in English

Mr. Purcell owns a pet shop. He sold all kinds of pets as cats, dogs and monkeys. A constant stir of movement prevailed his shop. Twitters, squeals, covered the shop. Each morning he saw on a high stool to read the morning paper and whenever the customer entered, he glanced up.

The customer, who entered the shop had close-cropped hair. Mr. Purcell showed more concern about the weather. The customer asked Mr. Purcell for something in a cage, that flies. Mr. Purcell asked for a high bill which customer found difficult to pay. Finally he paid five dollars which he earned through great labour of ten years. Mr. Purcell wanted to give him advise about the care and feeding of his doves.

Bur Mr. Purcell was surprised to watch the customer half outside and draw out one of the doves. He drew out the second and tossed it after the first. Mr. Purcell could not understand that why had the man set the doves free.

Golu Grows a Nose Summary in English

This is the story of how elephant came to have trunk. There was a baby elephant, Golu who had a small bulgy nose. He made fun of giraffe; hippopotamus, baboon. All of them had no answers for his questions.

One day Golu wanted to find out that what crocodile would eat for dinner. He went to Limpopo river to find out. When Golu reached the bank, he thought the crocodile to be a log of wood.

But Golu had actually asked the crocodile about the crocodile. As Golu went nearer, crocodile caught him by the nose. Python who had been following him, advised him to pull hard. As a result, the nose of Golu stretched longer. Golu sat for two days to make his nose cool. Python cheered up G olu and made him realize that trunk would be very advantageous for him.

With trunk he could remove the fly, pluck a large bundle of grass and take out mud from the bank. So Golu reached back home happily.

The Cop and the Anthem Summary in English

The story begins in Madison Square where Soapy a homeless, jobless man is searching for a place to stay as winter is fast approaching. His hopes are not to sail to some high destination but to just reach prison on Blackwell’s Island.

The narrator of the story was nine-years old when he was given to take care of five months old elephaiìt, Kan. Both ofthein grew together. The first thing which Kan did was to save the life of a boy. Rasheed was an innocent boy. He had gone to participate in a fair on the occasion of Eid with his uncle. Although his uncle had asked him to wait for him yet he could not resist the temptation of playing a game of chance at a lucky shop. He was tempted to play this game when he saw other players winning big prizes. But when he himself played this game ultimately he was left with no money. On finding Rasheed upset his uncle asked him the reasons behind this and Rasheed told him the truth. Then uncle told him the trick of the trade that they were not the real players but they were the shopkeeper’s own friends. They were merely tempting him to play the game.

Munshi Premchand has narrated the story of two friends Jumman Shaikh and Algu Choudhry. Jumman got some property from his aunt on the understanding that she would stay with him and he would look after her. When this understanding is violated, she approaches the village panchayat. Algu is made the head Panch. He gives the verdict in favour of aunt. Consequently, a friend turns a foe.
