Now Toto was transferred to a big cage. It was in the servants’ quarters. There, other animals of grand-father’s private zoo were also kept. The zoo included a tortoise, a pair of rabbits, a pet squirrel and a pet goat. The monkey did not allow the animals to sleep in peace at night.
The next day, grandfather had to go to Saharanpur to get his pension. He decided to take Toto along with him. He got a big black canvas bag and put Toto into it. The bag was too strong for Toto to bite or tear. Toto remained in the bag as far as Saharanpur. At the gate, as the ticket-collector was checking grandfather’s ticket, Toto put his head out of the bag and grinned at the ticket-collector. He told the grandfather that there was a dog with him. Grandfather told him that it was not a dog but a monkey. But the ticket-collector was adamant and charged three rupees extra.
When finally, grandmother accepted Toto, he was given a room in the stable. There his companion was a donkey, named Nana. Toto gave Nana a lot of trouble and they never became friends.
In winter, Toto liked the bowl of warm water which grandmother gave him to bathe in. Toto would sit in the bowl. Then he would apply soap on his body. When the water became cold, he stepped out of the bowl. Then he would run into the kitchen to dry himself near the kitchen fire. If anybody laughed at him, he resented it. Then he refused to take bath.
One day Toto nearly boiled himself alive. There was a large kitchen kettle on the fire to boil for tea. Toto removed the lid and found the water warm. He got into the kettle. But soon, the water began to boil. Toto started jumping up. Grandmother heard the noise and came in. She took him out of the kettle.
Toto’s mind was full of mischiefs. One day, at lunch-time he found a large dish of rice on the dining table. He started eating the rice. When grandmother found Toto eating rice, she screamed. Toto threw a plate at her. An aunt of the narrator came forward. Toto threw a glass of water at her. Then Toto picked the dish of pullao and ran out. He sat on the jackffuit tree. He remained there all the afternoon, eating the rice. After that he threw the plate and broke it into pieces.
At last, grandfather realised that Toto could not be kept in house for long. The family could not bear the frequent loss of dishes, clothes, curtains and wallpapers. At last, grandfather found the tonga-driver. He sold Toto back for only three rupees.

गेट पर, जब टिकट-कलैक्टर दादा जी के टिकट की जाँच कर रहा था, टोटो ने अपना सिर थैले में से निकाला और टिकट-कलैक्टर की तरफ दाँत दिखाकर हंसा। उसने दादा जी से कहा कि उनके साथ एक कुत्ता है। दादा जी ने कहा कि यह कुत्ता नहीं, बंदर है। मगर टिकट-कलैक्टर अड़ियल था और उसने तीन रुपए अधिक वसूल लिए।
जब आखिर, दादी जी ने टोटो को स्वीकार कर लिया तो टोटो को तबेले में एक कमरा दे दिया गया। नाना नाम की एक गधी थी। टोटो ने नाना को बहुत तंग किया और वे कभी मित्र नहीं बन पाए।

बेकार में दादा जी ने टोटो को थैले में से बाहर निकाला; व्यर्थ में ही उन्होंने यह साबित करने का प्रयत्न किया कि बंदर को कुत्ता नहीं माना जा सकता, या न ही उसे चार टाँगों वाला जानवर माना जा सकता है। टिकट-कलेक्टर ने टोटो का वर्गीकरण कुत्ते के रूप में कर दिया, और उसके किराए के रूप में तीन रुपए देने पड़े।
तब दादा जी ने, केवल अपनी बात कहने के लिए, जेब में से अपना पालतू कछुआ निकाला, और कहा “क्योंकि तुम सब जानवरों का किराया लेते हो, मुझे इसके कितने पैसे देने होंगे ?”
टिकट-कलेक्टर ने कछुए को ध्यान से देखा, अपनी उंगली से इसे टटोला और दादा जी की तरफ प्रसन्नता और विजयी भाव से देखा, और कहा “कोई पैसे नहीं। यह कुत्ता नहीं है।”
