None of them ever comes back.” These words show Mr Lamb’s loneliness and disappointment. But he tries to overcome these feelings by watching, listening and thinking. He has no curtains on his windows. He loves to see the natural light and darkness. He loves to hear the winds blowing. People say bees buzz, but when he listens to them he feels that they are humming. He finds no difference between flowers, trees, herbs and weeds. To him, they are all growing living things. It is by such positive thinking that he tries to overcome his loneliness and disappointment.

When a person is disabled, the physical pain goes away with the passage of time. Even the inconvenience is reduced as the person because is used to his handicap. However, the real pain is caused by the attitude of the society towards the disabled person. Often people dislike a physically impaired person. They do not allow him to mix with them. They avoid him. Often they are afraid of him as in this play, people are afraid of Derry because of his burned face. As a result, the handicapped person feels a sense of alienation. He thinks that he is not a part of the normal society. A handicapped person expects others to treat him as a normal human being. He does not want to be treated as different. A picture hanging on the wall fell on his head and he died.

Derry tells Mr Lamb that his parents are worried about him. They fear that because of his burnt face, Derry would not be able to get on with the world. But when he comes back, he finds that Mr Lamb has fallen off a ladder while trying to reach apples. Derry finds that Mr Lamb is dead. His death makes Derry very sad.

On the Face of it Summary
Derry is a young boy. One day he goes to a garden. This garden belongs to an old man named Mr Lamb. Derry thinks that there is nobody in the garden. He wants to spend time in a lonely place. Though the gate is open, but Derry does not know it. He scales a wall to enter the garden. Suddenly Derry sees Mr Lamb sitting in the garden. Derry is startled. He wants to go back, but Mr Lamb speaks to him in a kind tone. He tells Derry that he is welcome there. He tells him not to be afraid of him.

Derry says that he is not afraid of anybody. On the other hand, people are afraid of him. One side of his face is burnt. It got burnt by acid. His face looks ugly and so people avoid him and hate him. Some people show as if they do not mind his burned face. Yet Derry knows that they try to avoid him.

Mr Lamb tells him that he does not hate him. He says that soon he will get ripe crab apples to make them into jelly. He asks Derry if he would help him to pick apples. Derry thinks that like most other people, Mr Lamb is also trying to change the topic. But Mr Lamb assures Derry that he really does not dislike him. The real worth of a person is not in his looks or outer appearance. His real worth in him. Mr Lamb says that there are weeds in his garden. Other people look down upon weeds. But he looks upon weeds as living, growing plants like any other plant. He means to say that he does not hate Derry. He looks upon Derry as any other boys.

Mr Lamb tells Derry that he too has a physical deformity. He has an artificial leg. His real leg was blown off in the war. Children call him Lamely-Mr Lamb. But he does not mind it. He is not afraid of the children and children are not afraid of him. They come to him often and he gives them toffees. Mr Lamb advises Derry that he should also not mind what others say about his face. Mr Lamb tells Derry that beauty is not merely in the physical body. Real beauty lies within our spirits.

Mr Lamb consoles Derry. He tells Derry that worse things could have happened to him. He could have been blind or born deaf. Derry says that other people have consoled him by telling him that many people bear their sufferings without any complaint. Derry has heard a woman say that the handicapped people like Derry should live with the other handicapped people only. But Mr Lamb does not agree to this. He says that physical deformity does not make people similar.

Everyone is unique because people have different ideas and thoughts. Derry thinks that Mr Lamb is peculiar. He wants to know how he has learned so much. Mr Lamb tells him that he has learnt all by watching, listening and thinking. He has a number of books. He listens to the humming music of the bees. He watches plants and trees. He thinks deeply over all these things.

Derry thinks that people are not friendly. So he hates most people. He avoids them and likes to remain aloof. But Mr Lamb tells him that if people are not friends, it does not mean that they are enemies. He advises him not to hate anybody. Hatred is worse than the acid that burnt his face, because hatred burns the inside of man. Mr Lamb tells him that keeping aloof will not help him.

Mr Lamb tells him the story of a man who was always afraid of meeting an accident or catching an infectious disease. He shut himself up in a room. He thought that by always remaining in a room he could avoid meeting an accident. But it was not so. He had an accident even in the room. A picture hanging on the wall fell on his head and he died.

Derry is impressed by the encouragement given to him by Mr Lamb. He tells him that he is going home to tell his parents that he will spend sometime with Mr Lamb. He tells Mr Lamb that it is risky for him to climb the lad mself killed. Mr Lamb tells him that he has learned the art of climbing the ladder in spite of being lame. Derry promises him that he will come back soon. Mr Lamb does not hope that he will come back. Derry rushes home because he thinks his mother would be worried.

He tells his mother about his meeting with Mr Lamb. His mother does not want that he should go back to him. But Derry tells her that Mr Lamb is a different man. He thinks that it is an opportunity that he should not miss. So he hurries back to Mr Lamb’s garden. When he reaches the garden, he finds that Mr Lamb has fallen on the ground. He has fallen off a ladder. He was trying to reach apples. Unluckily he fell off. Derry finds that Mr Lamb is already dead. This is a great shock to him. He weeps because he has lost a true friend.

MR LAMB : That’s all right. I am here. What are you afraid of boy? That’s all right.
DERRY : I thought it was empty ……….an empty house.
MR LAMB : So it is. Since I’m out here in the garden. It is empty. Until I go back inside. In the
meantime, I’m out here and likely to stop. A day like this. Beautiful day. Not a day to
be indoors.

MR LAMB : I saw you. But the gate’s open. All welcome. You’re welcome. I sit here. I like sitting.

When I look in the mirror, and see it, I’m afraid of me.
MR LAMB : No, Not the whole of you. Not of you. DERRY : Yes! [Pause]

DERRY: What have you changed the subject for? People always do that. Why don’t you ask me? Why do you do what they all do and pretend it isn’t true and isn’t there? In case I see you looking and mind and get upset? I’ll tell……you don’t ask me because you’re afraid to.

DERRY: Not in a fire. I got acid all down that side of my face and it burned it all away. It ate my face up. It ate me up. And now it’s like this and it won’t ever be any different.
MR LAMB: No.

MR LAMB: You’re a boy who came into the garden. Plenty do. I’m interested in anybody. Anything. There’s nothing God made that doesn’t interest me. Look over there…..over beside the far wall. What can you see?

DERRY: Rubbish.
MR LAMB: Rubbish? Look, boy, look…..what do you see?
DERRY: Just….grass and stuff. Weeds.
MR LAMB: Some call them weeds. If you like, then……a weed garden, that. There’s fruit and there are flowers, and trees and herbs. All sorts. But over there…..weeds. I grow weeds there. Why is one green, growing plant called a weed and another ‘flower’? Where’s
the difference. It’s all life….growing. Same as you and me.
DERRY : We’re not the same.
डैरी : बेकार की बात।
श्री लैंब : बेकार की बात ? देखो, लड़के, जरा ध्यान से देखो….तुम क्या देखते हो?
डैरी : बस……. घास और वैसी ही चीजें । जंगली पौधे। श्री लैंब : कुछ लोग उन्हें जंगली पौधे कहते हैं। अगर तुम चाहो तो…..एक जंगली पौधे का बगीचा है, वह । वहाँ हर प्रकार के फल, फूल, वृक्ष और बूटियाँ हैं। सभी प्रकार के। परन्तु वहाँ…..जंगली पौधे । मैं वहाँ जंगली पौधे उगाता हूँ। क्यों किसी हरे-भरे, बढ़ते पौधे को जंगली पौधा और किसी को ‘फूल’ कहते हैं? अन्तर कहाँ है ? यह सब जीवन है…..उगता हुआ। बिल्कुल तुम्हारी और मेरी तरह।
डैरी : हम एक-जैसे नहीं हैं।)
MR LAMB: I’m old. You’re young. You’ve got a burned face, I’ve got a tin leg. Not important. You’re standing there…I’m sitting here. Where’s the difference?
DERRY: Why have you got a tin leg?
MR LAMB: Real one got blown off, years back. Lamey-Mr Lamb, some kids say. Haven’t you heard them? You will. Lamey-Mr Lamb. It fits. Doesn’t trouble me.

MR LÁMB: Some do. Some don’t. They get tired of it, in the end. There are plenty of other things to stare at.

तुम यह मत सोचना कि मुझे लोगों ने वह परियों की कहानी पहले नहीं सुनाई। ‘तुम जो दिखते हो, वह नहीं हो, तुम वह हो जो तुम अंदर से हो। सुन्दर वह होता है जो सुन्दर काम करता है। सुन्दर लड़की ने दैत्याकार पशु को प्यार किया और जब उसने उसे चूमा तो वह सुन्दर राजकुमार बन गया। पर वह ऐसा चाहता नहीं था, वह तो दैत्याकार पशु बने रहना अधिक पसन्द करता था। मैं बदलूँगा नहीं।)

MR LAMB: In that way? No, you won’t.
DERRY: And no one’ll kiss me, ever. Only my mother and she kisses me on the other side of my face, and I don’t like my mother to kiss me, she does it because she has to. Why should I like that? I don’t care if nobody ever kisses me.

डैरी : मुझे चूमने कौन देगा ? एक भी नहीं। श्री लैंब : कौन जाने ?)
DERRY : I won’t ever look different. When I’m as old as you, I’ll look the same. I’ll still only have half a face.
MR LAMB : So you will. But the world won’t. The world’s got a whole face, and the world’s there to be looked at.
DERRY : Do you think this is the world ? This old garden ?
MR LAMB : When I’m here. Not the only one. But the world, as much as anywhere.
DERRY : Does your leg hurt you?
MR LAMB: Tin doesn’t hurt, boy!
(डैरी : मैं कभी भी अलग नज़र नहीं आऊँगा। जब मैं आपकी उम्र का हो जाऊँगा तो भी ऐसा ही लगूंगा। तब भी चेहरा आधा ही होगा। श्री लैंब : तुम ऐसे ही रहोगे। पर संसार नहीं। संसार का चेहरा पूरा है और यह संसार देखने के लिए है।
डैरी : क्या आपके विचार में संसार यही है ? यह पुराना बगीचा ?
श्री लैंब : जब मैं यहाँ हूँ। एकमात्र नहीं। पर वैसे ही जैसे संसार किसी अन्य स्थान पर है।
डैरी : क्या आपकी टाँग आपको दर्द करती है ?
श्री लैंब : टीन कष्ट नहीं देता, बेटे!)
DERRY: When it came off, did it?
MR LAMB: Certainly.
DERRY: And now? I mean, where the tin stops, at the top?
MR LAMB: Now and then. In wet weather. It doesn’t signify.
DERRY: Oh, that’s something else they all say. ‘Look at all those people who are in pain and brave and never cry and never complain and don’t feel sorry for themselves.’
MR LAMB: I haven’t said it.
(डैरी : जब यह कटी थी तो क्या इसने दर्द किया था ? श्री लैंब : अवश्य। डैरी : और अब? मेरा मतलब, जहाँ ऊपरी किनारे पर टीन की टाँग टकराती है ?

डैरी : ओह, लोग एक और बात भी कहते हैं। ‘उन लोगों की तरफ देखो जो कष्ट में हैं, बहादुरी से सामना करते हैं और न कभी रोते हैं, न शिकायत करते हैं और अपने ऊपर तरस नहीं खाते।’

DERRY: And think of all those people worse off than you. Think, you might have been blinded, or born deaf, or have to live in a wheelchair or be daft in your head and dribble.
MR LAMB: And that’s all true, and you know it.

DERRY : It won’t make my face change. Do you know, one day, a woman went by me in the street-I was at a bus-stop-and she was with another woman, and she looked at me, and she said….whispered….only I heard her…..she said, “Look at that, that’s a terrible
thing. That’s a face only a mother could love.”
MR LAMB: So you believe everything you hear, then?
DERRY: It was cruel.
MR LAMB: Maybe not meant as such. Just something said between them.
DERRY: Only I heard it. I heard.
MR LAMB: And is that the only thing you ever heard anyone say, in your life?
DERRY: Oh no! I’ve heard a lot of things.
MR LAMB: So now you keep your ears shut.
DERRY: You’re…………..peculiar. You say peculiar things. You ask questions. I don’t understand.
MR LAMB: I like to talk. Have company. You don’t have to answer questions. You dont have to
stop here at all. The gate’s open.
DERRY : Yes, but….
इससे मेरा चेहरा नहीं बदल जाएगा। आपको पता है, एक दिन, एक औरत गली में मेरे पास से गुजरीमैं एक बस-स्टॉप पर था और वह किसी अन्य औरत के साथ थी, और उसने मेरी ओर देखा, और वह बोली….बुड़बुड़ायी….केवल मैंने उसे सुना….वह बोली, “उसको देखो, कैसी भयानक चीज़ है। वह ऐसा चेहरा है जिसे कोई माँ ही प्यार कर सकती है।”
श्री लैंब : तो इसका अर्थ है तुम हर सुनी हुई बात पर विश्वास कर लेते हो ?
डैरी : यह क्रूर बात थी।
श्री लैंब : शायद इसका ऐसा अभिप्राय नहीं था। केवल आपस में कही गई कोई बात थी।
डैरी : केवल मैंने इसे सुना। मैंने सुना।
श्री लैंब : और क्या तुमने अपने जीवन में किसी द्वारा कही गई केवल यही बात सुनी है ?
डैरी : अरे नहीं! मैंने बहुत-सी बातें सुनी हैं।
श्री लैंब : तो अब तुम्हें अपने कान बन्द कर लेने चाहिएँ।
डैरी : तुम…………..अजीब हो। तुम अजीब बातें करते हो। तुम जो प्रश्न करते हो, मेरी समझ में नहीं आते हैं।
श्री लैंब : मुझे बात करना अच्छा लगता है। साथ रहना अच्छा लगता है। तुम्हें प्रश्नों के उत्तर देने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। तुम्हें यहाँ रुकने की भी आवश्यकता नहीं है। गेट खुला है।
डैरी : हाँ, लेकिन…..)
MR LAMB: I’ve a hive of bees behind those trees over there. Some hear bees and they say, bees buzz. But when you listen to bees for a long while, they humm….and hum means ‘sing’.I hear them singing, my bees.
(श्री लैंब : उन सामने वाले पेड़ों के पीछे, मेरे पास मधुमक्खियों का छत्ता है। कुछ लोग उन मधुमक्खियों की आवाज़ सुनकर कहते हैं वे भिनभिना रही हैं। पर जब आप काफी देर तक मधुमक्खियों की आवाज़ सुनते रहें, तो वे गुनगुनाने लगती हैं …….और गुनगुनाने का अर्थ है ‘गाना’। मैं उन्हें गाता हुआ सुनता हूँ, मेरी मधुमक्खियाँ।)
DERRY : But….I like it here. I came in because I liked it….when I looked over the wall.
MR LAMB : If you’d seen me, you’d not have come in.
DERRY : No.
MR LAMB : No.
DERRY : It’d have been tress
MR LAMB : Ah. That’s not why.
DERRY : I don’t like being near people. When they stare…. when I see them being afraid of me.
(डैरी : पर……यह जगह मुझे पसन्द है। मैं इसलिए अन्दर आया, क्योंकि यह मुझे पसन्द है……..जब मैंने दीवार के ऊपर से देखा।
श्री लैंब : अगर तुमने मुझे देख लिया होता, तो तुम न आते।
डैरी: नहीं। श्री लैंब : नहीं।
डैरी: यह अनाधिकृत प्रवेश होता। श्री लैंब : आह । यही कारण नहीं है।
डैरी : मैं लोगों के पास होना पसन्द नहीं करता। जब वे घूरते हैं….जब मैं उन्हें स्वयं से डरते देखता हूँ।)

MR LAMB: You could lock yourself up in a room and never leave it. There was a man who did that. He was afraid, you see. Of everything. Everything in this world. A bus might run him over, or a man might breathe deadly germs onto him, or a donkey might kick him to death, or lightning might strike him down, or he might love a girl and the girl would leave him, and he might slip on a banana skin and fall and people who saw him would laugh their heads off. So he went into this room, and locked the door, and got into his bed, and stayed there.

(श्री लैंब : तुम चाहो तो स्वयं को सदा के लिए एक कमरे में बंद कर सकते हो। एक आदमी था जिसने ऐसा किया। देखो, वह डरता था। हर चीज़ से। इस संसार की प्रत्येक वस्तु से। क्या पता कोई बस उसे कुचल दे, या कोई व्यक्ति सांस से उसके ऊपर घातक कीटाणु फेंक दे, या कोई गधा उसे दुलत्ती मारकर उसकी जान ले ले, या फिर बिजली उस पर पड़कर उसे गिरा दे, या फिर वह किसी लड़की से प्यार कर बैठे और वह लड़की उसे छोड़ दे, और हो सकता था कि वह किसी केले के छिलके पर फिसलकर गिर जाए और उसे देखने वाले हँस-हँसकर पागल हो जाएँ। इसलिए वह अपने कमरे में गया और दरवाजा बंद कर लिया, और अपने बिस्तर में लेट गया और वहीं रहा।)
DERRY : Forever?
MR LAMB: For a while.
DERRY : Then what?
MR LAMB: A picture fell off the wall on to his head and killed him.[Derry laughs a lot]
MR LAMB: You see?
DERRY: But…..you still say peculiar things.
MR LAMB: Peculiar to some.
DERRY: What do you do all day?
MR LAMB: Sit in the sun. Read books. Ah, you thought it was an empty house, but inside, it’s full. Books and other things. Full.
(डैरी : सदा के लिए ?
श्री लैंब : कुछ समय के लिए। डैरी : फिर क्या हुआ ?
श्री लैंब : दीवार से एक तस्वीर उसके सिर पर गिरी और वह मर गया। [डैरी बहुत हँसता है]
श्री लैंब : तुम समझे ?
डैरी: परन्तु….अब भी आपकी बातें अजीब लगती हैं।
श्री लैंब : कुछ लोगों को अजीब लगती हैं।
डैरी: तुम सारा दिन क्या करते हो ?
श्री लैंब : धूप में बैठता हूँ। किताबें पढ़ता हूँ। आह, तुम्हें लगा था कि यह घर खाली है, पर अन्दर से यह भरा पड़ा है। यह किताबों व अन्य वस्तुओं से भरा है। पूरा भरा है।)
DERRY : But there aren’t any curtains at the windows.
MR LAMB: I’m not fond of curtains. Shutting things out, shutting things in. I like the light and the darkness, and the windows open, to hear the wind.
DERRY : Yes. I like that. When it’s raining, I like to hear it on the roof.
MR LAMB : So you’re not lost, are you? Not altogether ? You do hear things. You listen.
(डैरी : मगर वहाँ खिड़कियों पर परदे नहीं हैं। श्री लैंब : मुझे परदों का शौक नहीं है। बाहर की चीज़ों को बन्द करना या छुपाना; अन्दर की चीज़ों को बन्द करना या छुपाना। मुझे प्रकाश और अंधकार पसन्द है, और खुली खिड़कियाँ, ताकि हवा सुनाई देती रहे।
श्री लैंब : हाँ। मुझे वह पसन्द है। जब वर्षा होती है तब छत पर इसकी आवाज़ सुनना मुझे पसन्द है।
डैरी : तो अभी तक तुमने स्वयं को नहीं खोया है, नहीं न ? पूरी तरह तो नहीं ? तुम चीजें सुनते हो। तुम सुनते हो।)
DERRY : They talk about me. Downstairs, when I’m not there. What’ll he ever do ? What’s going to happen to him when we’ve gone? How ever will he get on in this world ? Looking like that ? With that on his face ?’ That’s what they say.
MR LAMB: Lord, boy, you’ve got two arms, two legs and eyes and ears, you’ve got a tongue and a brain. You’ll get on the way you want, like all the rest. And if you chose, and set your mind to it, you could get on better than all the rest.
(डेरी : वे (मेरे माता-पिता) मेरे बारे में बातें करते हैं। नीचे, जब मैं वहाँ नहीं होता हूँ। ‘यह करेगा क्या ? हमारे मरने के बाद इसका क्या होगा ? इस संसार में यह कैसे रह पाएगा ? इस शक्ल के साथ ? चेहरे पर इन निशानों के साथ?’ वे ऐसी बातें करते हैं।
श्री लैंब : हे भगवान, लड़के, तुम्हारे दो बाजू हैं, दो टाँगें हैं और आँखें और कान हैं, तुम्हारे पास जीभ और दिमाग है। बाकी सभी लोगों की तरह तुम भी मनचाहे रास्ते पर चलोगे। और अगर तुमने चाहा और इस पर अपना दिमाग केंद्रित किया, तो तुम बाकी सब लोगों से अधिक अच्छा काम कर सकोगे।)
DERRY : How ?
MR LAMB : Same way as I do.
DERRY: Do you have any friends?
MR LAMB: Hundreds.
DERRY: But you live by yourself in that house. It’s a big house, too.
श्री लैंब : जैसे मैं करता हूँ।
डैरी : क्या तुम्हारा कोई मित्र है ?
श्री लैंब: सैकड़ों।
डैरी : पर आप इस घर में अकेले रहते हैं। यह घर बड़ा भी है।)
MR LAMB: Friends everywhere. People come in…. everybody knows me. The gate’s always open. They come and sit here. And in front of the fire in winter. Kids come for the apples and pears. And for toffee. I make toffee with honey. Anybody comes. So have you.
DERRY: But I’m not a friend.
MR LAMB : Certainly you are. So far as I’m concerned.What have you done to make me think you’re not?
DERRY : You don’t know me. You don’t know where I come from or even what my name is.
(श्री लैंब : हर स्थान पर मेरे मित्र हैं। लोग अन्दर आते हैं…..हर आदमी मुझे जानता है। गेट सदा खुला रहता है। लोग आते हैं और यहाँ बैठते हैं। और सर्दी में आग के सामने । बच्चे सेब और नाशपाती के लिए आते हैं। और टॉफी के लिए। मैं शहद की टॉफी बनाता हूँ। कोई भी आ जाता है। ऐसे ही तुम आए।
डैरी : पर मैं कोई मित्र नहीं हूँ।
श्री लैंब : निःसन्देह तुम मित्र हो। जहाँ तक मेरा सम्बन्ध है। तुमने ऐसा क्या किया है कि मैं समझू कि तुम मित्र नहीं हो।
हैरी : तुम मुझे जानते नहीं। तुम्हें यह भी नहीं मालूम कि मैं कहाँ से आया हूँ और मेरा क्या नाम है।)
MR LAMB : Why should that signify? Do I have to write all your particulars down and put them in a filing box, before you can be a friend ?
DERRY: I suppose….not. No.
MR LAMB: You could tell me your name. If you chose. And not, if you didn’t.
DERRY: Derry. Only it’s Derek…..but I hate that. Derry. If I’m your friend, you don’t have to be mine. I choose that.
MR LAMB: Certainly.
DERRY: I might never come here again, you might never see me again and then I couldn’t still be a friend.
MR LAMB: Why not?
(श्री लैंब : इसका अर्थ क्या है ? क्या मुझे तुम्हें मित्र बनाने से पहले तुम्हारे बारे में सारे तथ्यों को लिखकर एक बक्से में भरना होगा, इससे पहले कि मैं तुम्हें मित्र कह सकूँ?
डैरी: मेरा ख्याल है……नहीं। नहीं।
डैरी : तुम मुझे अपना नाम बता सकते हो। चाहो तो। और न चाहो तो नहीं।
डैरी : डैरी। वैसे यह डैरेक है…..पर मुझे उससे घृणा है।
डैरी : अगर मैं तुम्हारा मित्र हूँ, तुम्हें मेरा मित्र होने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। इस बात का चुनाव मैं करूँगा।
डैरी: निःसन्देह।
डैरी : मैं शायद यहाँ फिर कभी न आऊँ, तुम शायद मुझे फिर कभी न मिलो और तब मैं तुम्हारा मित्र नहीं रहूँगा।
श्री लैंब : क्यों नहीं?)
DERRY: How could I? You pass people in the street and you might even speak to them, but you never see them again. It doesn’t mean they’re friends.
MR LAMB: Doesn’t mean they’re enemies, either, does it?
DERRY: No they’re just….nothing. People. That’s all.
MR LAMB: People are never just nothing. Never.
DERRY: There are some people I hate.
MR LAMB That’d do you more harm than any bottle of acid. Acid only burns your face.

DERRY: Only…
(डैरी : मैं मित्र कैसे हो सकता हूँ ? तुम सड़क पर चलते हुए लोगों के पास से गुजरते हो और शायद तुम उनसे बोलो भी, पर आप फिर उनसे मिलते नहीं हो। इसका अर्थ यह नहीं कि वे मित्र हो गए। श्री लैंब : इसका अर्थ यह भी नहीं कि वे शत्रु हो गए, है न?
डैरी: नहीं, बस वे हैं…..कुछ नहीं। लोग। और कुछ नहीं।
श्री लैंब : लोग कभी भी केवल कुछ नहीं होते। कभी नहीं।
डैरी: कुछ लोग हैं जिनसे मैं नफरत करता हूँ।
श्री लैंब : किसी तेज़ाब की बोतल की अपेक्षा इससे तुम्हें अधिक नुकसान होगा। तेज़ाब तो केवल चेहरा जलाता है।
डैरी: केवल……)
MR LAMB: Like a bomb only blew up my leg. There’s worse things can happen. You can burn yourself away inside.
DERRY: After I’d come home, one person said, “He’d have been better off stopping in there. In the hospital. He’d be better off with others like himself.” She thinks blind people only ought to be with other blind people and idiot boys with idiot boys.
MR LAMB: And people with no legs altogether?
DERRY: That’s right.
MR LAMB: What kind of a world would that be?
DERRY : At least there’d be nobody to stare at you because you weren’t like them.
(श्री लैंब : जैसे कि एक बम ने केवल मेरी टाँग उड़ा दी। इससे बुरी बहुत-सी बातें हो सकती हैं। तुम अपने-आपको अन्दर से जला सकते हो।
डैरी : मेरे घर आने के बाद एक व्यक्ति ने कहा, “अगर यह वहीं रहता तो इसके लिए बेहतर रहता। अस्पताल में। अपने जैसे अन्य लोगों के साथ वह अधिक अच्छा महसूस करता।” वह सोचती है कि अंधों को केवल दूसरे अंधों के साथ रहना चाहिए और बुद्धिहीन लड़कों को बुद्धिहीन लड़कों के साथ।
श्री लैंब : और वे लोग जिनकी कोई टाँग न हो सारे एक-साथ।
डैरी : बिल्कुल सही। श्री लैंब : वह संसार कैसा होगा ?
डैरी : कम-से-कम कोई ऐसा आदमी तो न होगा जो आपको केवल इसलिए घूरे कि आप उस जैसे नहीं हैं।)
MR LAMB : So you think you’re just the same as all the other people with burned faces ? Just by what you look like ? Ah…..everything’s different. Everything’s the same, but everything is different. Itself.
DERRY: How do you make all that out?
MR LAMB: Watching. Listening. Thinking.
DERRY: I’d like a place like this. A garden. I’d like a house with no curtains.
MR LAMB: The gate’s always open.
(श्री लैंब : तो तुम्हारा ख्याल है कि तुम बिल्कुल वैसे ही हो जैसे दूसरे जले हुए चेहरे वाले लोग हैं ? केवल इस कारण से कि तुम दिखाई कैसे देते हो ? आह…..हर बात अलग है। हर बात समान है, पर हर बात अलग है। अपने-आप। डैरी : आप इतना कुछ कैसे समझते हैं ?
श्री लैंब : देखकर। सुनकर। सोचकर।
डैरी: मैं इस तरह की जगह चाहता हूँ। एक बगीचा। मैं बिना परदों वाला घर चाहता हूँ। श्री लैंब दरवाजा सदा खुला रहता है।)
DERRY : But this isn’t mine.
MR LAMB: Everything’s yours if you want it. What’s mine is anybodys?
DERRY: So I could come here again? Even if you were out…I could come here.
MR LAMB: Certainly. You might find others here, of course.
DERRY: Oh…
MR LAMB: Well, that needn’t stop you, you needn’t mind.
DERRY: It’d stop them. They’d mind me. When they saw me here. They look at my face and run.
MR LAMB: They might. They might not. You’d have to take the risk. So would they.
DERRY: No, you would. You might have me and lose all your other friends because nobody wants to stay near me if they can help it.
MR LAMB: I’ve not moved.
DERRY: No…..
(डैरी : पर यह मेरा नहीं है। श्री लैंब : हर वस्तु जो तुम चाहो, वह तुम्हारी है। जो मेरा है वह हर किसी का है।
डैरी : तो मैं यहाँ फिर आ सकता हूँ ? चाहे तुम न भी हो…..मैं अंदर आ सकता हूँ।
श्री लैंब : जरूर। हाँ तुम्हें यहाँ दूसरे लोग भी मिल सकते हैं।
डैरी: ओह….. श्री लैंब : देखो, इस कारण तुम्हें आना बन्द करने की जरूरत नहीं है, न तुम्हें बुरा मानने की जरूरत है।
डैरी: इस कारण वे रुक जाएंगे। उन्हें मेरी उपस्थिति बुरी लगेगी। वे मेरे चेहरे को देखते ही भाग जाएँगे।
श्री लैंब : शायद । शायद नहीं भी। तुम्हें यह खतरा तो मोल लेना ही होगा। इसी प्रकार उन्हें भी।
डैरी : नहीं, खतरा मोल आपको लेना होगा। शायद आप मुझे तो बुला लें और अपने अन्य सारे मित्रों से हाथ धो बैठें, क्योंकि कोई मेरे पास ठहरना नहीं चाहता है, अगर वे लाचार न हों।
श्री लैंब : मैं तो नहीं भागा। डैरी
डैरी: नहीं…..)
MR LAMB: When I go down the street, the kids shout ‘Lamey-Lamb’. But they still come into the garden, into my house; it’s a game. They’re not afraid of me. Why should they be ?, Because I’m not afraid of them, that’s why not.
DERRY: Did you get your leg blown off in the war?
MR LAMB: Certainly.
DERRY: How will you climb on a ladder and get the crab apples down, then?
MR LAMB: Oh, there’s a lot of things I’ve learned to do, and plenty of time for it. Years. I take it steady.
DERRY: If you fell and broke your neck, you could lie on the grass and die. If you were on your own.
MR LAMB: I could.
(श्री लैंब : जब मैं गली में से गुजरता हूँ, बच्चे चिल्लाते हैं ‘लेमी-श्री लैंब’। पर वे फिर भी बगीचे में आते हैं, मेरे घर में आते हैं; यह एक खेल है। वे मुझसे डरते नहीं हैं। क्यों डरें? , क्योंकि मैं उनसे नहीं डरता हूँ, यही कारण है कि वे नहीं डरते हैं।
डैरी : क्या आपकी टाँग युद्ध में उड़ गई थी।
श्री लैंब : हाँ। डैरी : तो आप सीढ़ी पर कैसे चढ़ेंगे और कैब सेब को कैसे तोड़ेंगे।
श्री लैंब : ओह, मैंने बहुत-सी बातें करनी सीख ली हैं, और मेरे पास इसके लिए बहुत समय है। कितने ही वर्ष मैं इसे कसकर पकड़ता हूँ।
डैरी: अगर तुम गिरे और गर्दन टूट गई, तब तुम घास पर गिरकर मर सकते हो। अगर आप अकेले हो तो।
श्री लैंब : हो सकता है।)
DERRY : You said I could help you.
MR LAMB: If you want to.
DERRY: But my mother wants to know where I am. It’s three miles home, across the fields. I’m fourteen. But they still want to know where I am.
MR LAMB: People worry.
DERRY: People fuss.
MR LAMB: Go back and tell them.
(डैरी : आपने कहा कि मैं आपकी सहायता कर सकता हूँ।
श्री लैंब : अगर तुम चाहो तो। डैरी : पर मेरी माँ जानना चाहेगी कि मैं कहाँ हूँ। घर यहाँ से तीन मील दूर है, खेतों के पार । मैं चौदह का हूँ। पर फिर भी वे जानना चाहते हैं कि मैं कहाँ हूँ।
श्री लैंब : लोग चिन्ता करते हैं।
डैरी: लोग नाराज़ होते हैं।
श्री लैंब : वापिस जाओ और उन्हें बता दो।)
DERRY : It’s a three miles.
MR LAMB: It’s a fine evening. You’ve got legs.
DERRY: Once I got home, they’d never let me come back.
MR LAMB: Once you got home, you’d never let yourself come back.
DERRY: You don’t know……you don’t know what I could do.
MR LAMB: No. Only you know that.
DERRY: If I chose.
MR LAMB : Ah….if you chose. I don’t know everything, boy. I can’t tell you what to do.
(डैरी : तीन मील का रास्ता है। श्री लैंब : आज शाम मौसम अच्छा है। तुम्हारे पास टाँगें हैं।
डैरी : एक बार मैं घर पहुँच गया तो वे मुझे कभी वापिस नहीं आने देंगे।
श्री लैंब : अगर तुम एक बार घर पहुंच गए तो तुम खुद वापिस नहीं आओगे।
डैरी : तुम्हें नहीं पता…..तुम्हें नहीं पता कि मैं क्या कर सकता हूँ।
श्री लैंब : नहीं। यह तो केवल तुम जानते हो।
डैरी: अगर मैं चाहूँ….
श्री लैंब : आह……अगर तुम चाहो।
लड़के, मैं हर बात नहीं जानता। मैं तुम्हें नहीं बता सकता कि तुम्हें क्या करना चाहिए।)
DERRY : They tell me.
MR LAMB: Do you have to agree?
DERRY: I don’t know what I want. I want….something no one else has got or ever will have. Something just mine. Like this garden. I don’t know what it is.
MR LAMB: You could find out.
DERRY : How ? MR LAMB : Waiting. Watching. Listening. Sitting here or going there. I’ll have to see to the bees.
(डैरी : वे बताते हैं। श्री लैंब : क्या तुम्हें सहमत होना पड़ता है ?
डैरी : मुझे नहीं पता कि मैं क्या चाहता हूँ। मैं चाहता हूँ….कुछ ऐसा जो किसी के पास नहीं है और न कभी होगा। जैसे कि यह बगीचा। मुझे नहीं पता कि वह वस्तु क्या है।
श्री लैंब : तुम पता लगा सकते हो।
हैरी : कैसे ? श्री लैंब : प्रतीक्षा करके। देखकर। सुनकर। यहाँ बैठकर या वहाँ जाकर। मुझे मधुमक्खियों को देखना होगा।)
DERRY : Those other people who come here…..do they talk to you ? Ask you things ?
MR LAMB : Some do, some don’t. I ask them. I like to learn.
DERRY : I don’t believe in them. I don’t think anybody ever comes. You’re here all by yourself and miserable and no one would know if you were alive or dead and nobody cares.
डैरी : क्या अन्य लोग जो यहाँ पर आते हैं……क्या वे तुमसे बात करते हैं ? तुमसे कुछ पूछते हैं ?
श्री लैंब : कुछ करते हैं, कुछ नहीं करते हैं। मैं उनसे पूछता हूँ। मैं सीखना चाहता हूँ।
डैरी: मुझे उन पर विश्वास नहीं है। मेरे ख्याल से कभी कोई नहीं आता। तुम यहाँ बिल्कुल अकेले हो और दुःखी हो और कभी कोई भी नहीं जान पाएगा कि तुम जीवित हो या मृत और किसी को परवाह नहीं है।)

MR LAMB: You think what you please.
DERRY: All right then, tell me some of their names.
MR LAMB: What are names? Tom, Dick or Harry. [Getting up I’m off down to the bees].
DERRY: I think you’re daft…..crazy…..
MR LAMB: That’s a good excuse.
DERRY: What for? You don’t talk sense.
MR LAMB : Good excuse not to come back. And you’ve got a burned-up face, and that’s other people’s excuse.
DERRY : You’re like the others, you like to say things like that. If you don’t feel sorry for my face, you’re frightened of it, and if you’re not frightened, you think I’m ugly as a devil. I am a devil. Don’t you ? [Shouts]
(श्री लैंब : तुम जैसा चाहो सोचो।।
डैरी : अच्छा फिर ठीक है, मुझे उनमें से कुछ के नाम बताओ।
श्री लैंब : नाम में क्या है ? टॉम, डिक और हैरी। [(उठते हुए)] मैं चला मधुमक्खियों की ओर । डैरी
डैरी: मेरा ख्याल है तुम मूर्ख हो ……. पागल …….
श्रीलैंब : यह अच्छा बहाना है।
हैरी : किस लिए ? तुम बुद्धिमत्तापूर्ण की बात नहीं करते।
श्री लैंब : वापिस न आने का अच्छा बहाना। और तुम्हारा चेहरा जला हुआ है, और यह दूसरे लोगों का बहाना है (तुम्हारे पास न आने का)। : तुम दूसरों की तरह हो, तुम इस तरह की बातें कहना पसंद करते हो। अगर तुम मेरे चेहरे पर तरस नहीं खाते, तो तुम इससे डरते हो, और अगर तुम डरते नहीं हो तो तुम सोचते हो कि मैं बहुत बदसूरत हूँ। मैं कोई शैतान हूँ। क्या तुम ऐसा नहीं सोचते ? [चीखता है] [Mr Lamb does not reply. He has gone to his bees.]
DERRY : [Quietly] No. You don’t. I like it here. [Pause. Derry gets up and shouts.] I’m going. But I’ll come back. You see. You wait. ‘I can run. I haven’t got a tin leg. I’ll be back. [Derry runs off. Silence. The sounds of the garden again.] ([श्री लैंब कोई उत्तर नहीं देते हैं। वह अपनी मधुमक्खियों के पास चला गया है।]
हैरी : [शांति से] नहीं। तुम नहीं। मुझे यह स्थान पसन्द है। [विराम]
डैरी: खड़ा होता है और चीखता है। मैं जा रहा हूँ। परन्तु मैं वापिस आऊँगा। देख लेना। तुम प्रतीक्षा करना। मैं दौड़ सकता हूँ। मेरी टाँग टीन की नहीं है। मैं वापिस आऊँगा। [डैरी दौड़ जाता है। चुप्पी। फिर बगीचे की आवाज़ आती है।)
MR LAMB : [To himself] There my dears. That’s you seen to. Ah……you know. We all know. “I’ll come back”. They never do, though. Not them. Never do come back. [The garden noises fade.]
(श्री लैंब : [अपने-आप से] ये मेरे प्यारे हैं। यह तो तुम देख चुके हो। आह…….तुम जानते हो। हम सब जानते हैं। “मैं वापिस आऊँगा।” परन्तु वे कभी नहीं आते हैं। वे नहीं। कभी वापिस नहीं आते। [बगीचे का शोर धीरे-धीरे समाप्त हो जाता है)

Scene Two
Derry’s house.
MOTHER: You think I don’t know about him, you think. I haven’t heard things.
DERRY: You shouldn’t believe all you hear.
MOTHER: Been told. Warned. We’ve not lived here three months, but I know what there is to know and you’re not to go back there.
DERRY: What are you afraid of? What do you think he is? An old man with a tin leg and he lives in a huge house without curtains and has a garden. And I want to be there, and sit and…..listen to things. Listen and look.

दृश्य दो
(डैरी का घर। : क्या तुम सोचते हो मैं उसके बारे में नहीं जानती, तुम सोचते हो मैंने कोई चीज़ नहीं सुनी।
माँ : तुमने जो सुना तुम्हें उस पर विश्वास नहीं करना चाहिए।
हैरी : मुझे बताया गया है। चेतावनी दी गई है। हम यहाँ तीन महीने से नहीं रह रहे थे, परन्तु मैं यह जानती हूँ अब तुम वहाँ दोबारा नहीं जाओगे।
माँ : आप किस बात से डरती हैं ? तुम्हारे अनुसार वह कौन है ? वह बूढ़ा आदमी जिसकी टीन की टाँग है जो बगैर पर्दे के एक बहुत बड़े घर में रहता है वहाँ एक बाग है। मैं वहाँ पर गया और बैठा…..
बहुत- सी चीजें सुनीं। सुनीं और देखीं।)
MOTHER : Listen to what ?
DERRY: Bees singing. Him talking.
MOTHER: And what’s he got to say to you?
DERRY: Things that matter. Things nobody else has ever said. Things I want to think about.
MOTHER: Then you stay here and do your thinking. You’re best off here.
DERRY: I hate it here.
MOTHER: You can’t help the things you say. I forgive you. It’s bound to make you feel bad things….and say them. I don’t blame you.
(माँ : क्या सुना ?
डैरी: मधुमक्खियों का गुनगुनाना। उसका बोलना।
माँ: और उसके पास तुम्हें कहने के लिए क्या है ?
डैरी: महत्त्वपूर्ण बातें। वे बातें जो आज तक किसी और ने मुझे नहीं बताईं। वे बातें जिनके बारे में सोचना चाहता हूँ।
माँ : तो तुम यहीं ठहरो और सोचो। तुम यहीं पर ठीक हो।
डैरी : मुझे इस स्थान से घृणा है।
माँ : जो कुछ तुम कह रहे हो उस पर तुम्हारा बस नहीं है। मैं तुम्हें माफ करती हूँ। तुम्हारा बुरा मानना अवश्यम्भावी है…और तुम कह लो। मैं तुम्हें दोष नहीं देती।)
DERRY : It’s got nothing to do with my face and what I look like. I don’t care about that and it isn’t important. It’s what I think and feel and what I want to see and find out and hear. And I’m going back there. Only to help him with the crab apples. Only to look at things and listen. But I’m going.
(डैरी : इसका मेरे चेहरे या मैं कैसा दिखता हूँ से कोई संबंध नहीं है। मुझे उसकी कोई चिंता नहीं है और न ही उसका कोई महत्त्व है। महत्त्व इस बात का है कि मैं क्या सोचता हूँ और क्या अनुभव करता हूँ और इसका कि मैं क्या देखना चाहता हूँ और पता लगाता और सुनता हूँ। और मैं वहाँ वापिस जा रहा हूँ। केवल कैब सेबों में उसकी सहायता के लिए। केवल चीज़ों को देखने और सुनने के लिए। लेकिन मैं जा रहा हूँ।)।
MOTHER: You’ll stop here.
DERRY : Oh no, oh no. Because if I don’t go back there, I’ll never go anywhere in this world again. [The door slams. Derry runs, panting.] And I want the world…..I want it……I want it…… [The sound of his panting fades.]
माँ : तुम यहीं रुकोगे।
डैरी: ओ नहीं, ओ नहीं। क्योंकि अगर मैं वापिस न गया तो फिर मैं इस संसार से कभी कहीं नहीं जा पाऊँगा। [दरवाज़ा बंद होता है। डैरी हाँफता हुआ दौड़ता है। और मुझे संसार चाहिए……मुझे चाहिए……मुझे चाहिए…… [हाँफने की आवाज़ समाप्त हो जाती है।])

Scene Three

Mr Lamb’s garden [Garden sounds: the noise of a branch shifting; apples thumping down; the branch shifting again.]
MR LAMB: Steady……that’s…….got it. That’s it…..[More apples fall] And again. That’s it…..and…. [A creak. A crash. The ladder falls back, Mr Lamb with it. A thump. The branch swishes back. Creaks. Then silence. Derry opens the garden gate, still panting.]

दृश्य तीन
(श्री लैंब का बगीचा। [बगीचे की आवाजें : किसी डाल के हिलने की आवाज़; सेबों का धम्म से गिरना; डाल का फिर से हिलना ।
श्री लैंब : रुको…..हाँ ठीक है…..पकड़ लिया। यही है……[और सेब गिरते हैं। और दोबारा। वह यह है….. और…….. [चटखने की आवाज़। गिरने की आवाज़। सीढ़ी और उसके साथ श्री लैंब गिरते हैं। एक धम्म की आवाज। डाली वापस उठ जाती है। आवाज़। फिर सन्नाटा। डैरी बगीचे का दरवाजा खोलता है, अभी भी हाँफ रहा है।)
Derry : You see, you see! I came back. You said I wouldn’t and they said…..but I came back, I wanted…. [He stops dead. Silence.] Mr Lamb, Mr …..You’ve…. [He runs through the grass. Stops. Kneels]
Mr Lamb, It’s all right….You fell…..I’m here, Mr Lamb, It’s all right. [Silence] I came back. Lamey-Lamb. I did…..come back. [Derry begins to weep.]

The End
(डैरी : तुम देखो, तुम देखो! मैं वापिस आ गया हूँ। तुम कहते थे मैं नहीं आऊँगा और वे कहते थे…..पर मैं आ गया, मैं चाहता था….. [वह एकदम रुक जाता है। सन्नाटा।]
श्री लैंब, श्री……..आप…….. [वह घास पर दौड़ता है। रुकता है। घुटनों पर झुकता है।]
श्री लैंब, कोई बात नहीं…….आप गिर गए……मैं यहाँ हूँ, श्री लैंब, कोई बात नहीं। [सन्नाटा]
मैं वापिस आ गया। लेमी-लैंब। सचमुच…..वापिस आ गया। [डैरी रोने लगता है।] समाप्त।
