The Cop and the Anthem Summary in English

The story begins in Madison Square where Soapy a homeless, jobless man is searching for a place to stay as winter is fast approaching. His hopes are not to sail to some high destination but to just reach prison on Blackwell’s Island.

Soapy’s planning to go on this island so that his care could be taken of. Soapy does his best to be on the wrong side of law but all in vain. His plan of going to restaurant and then caught for not paying the bill also fails.

Soapy tries his luck by misbehaving as if he is over drunk. He even throws a big stone at the glass. No cop touches him inspite of his all efforts. Feeling defeated he decides to go and sit in a park, his only home. There birds’ sweet music makes his mind change. At the old church a sudden change occurs in his soul.

He decided to change his life and become a man again. He thinks of finding a job. When he decides to search for new things, he is taken to Blackwell Island prison for three months by the New York Cop.

यह कहानी मैडिसन स्क्वेयर में घटित होती है। यहाँ पर एक बेघर और बेरोजगार नवयुवक सोपी सर्दी के आगमन पर रहने के लिए जगह ढूँढ रहा है। उसकी आशाएँ बहुत दूर तक जाने की नहीं हैं पर वह सिर्फ ब्लैकवेल टापू की जेल तक जाना चाहता है।

सोपी इस टापू तक सिर्फ इसलिए जाना चाहता है कि वह सर्दी का समय बिता सके। सोपी कानून तोड़ने की पूरी कोशिश करता है पर हर बार असफल रहता है। उसका रेस्तारां में जाकर बिना पैसे के खाने का उपाय भी असफल रहता है।

सोपी बुरे व्यवहार द्वारा भी अपनी किस्मत आजमाने की कोशिश करता है मानो उसने अधिक शराब पी रखी है। वह एक बड़ा पत्थर भी उठाकर काँच पर फेंकता है। पर इतने प्रयासों के बाद भी कोई पुलिसकर्मी उसे नहीं छूता।

हार मानकर वह अपने पार्क, जो उसका एकमात्र घर है, में जाकर बैठ जाता है। वहाँ पर चिड़ियों का चहचहाना उसमें बदलाव ले आता है। गिरजाघर में उसकी आत्मा में अचानक बदलाव आता है।

वह अपने आपको बदलने की सोचता है। वह नौकरी ढूँढने की कोशिश करता है। जब वह कछ नया करने की कोशिश करता है तब उसी समय उसे पुलिसकर्मी ब्लैकवेल टापू की जेल में तीन महीने के लिए बंद कर देता है।
